Director’s Statement

When I originally wrote and directed IN MY SLEEP in 2011, I was captivated by news stories of ordinary people performing extraordinary acts while sleeping, including murder. The concept that someone could engage in virtually any activity while sleepwalking, with no conscious recollection, deeply fascinated me. This film was my attempt to bring that unsettling experience to life on screen.

Now, with this Director’s Cut, I’ve had the opportunity to revisit and refine my original vision. This new version has been meticulously color-graded to enhance the film’s nocturnal atmosphere, immersing viewers even deeper into the protagonist’s reality. I’ve also incorporated additional footage while tightening the overall length for a more intense viewing experience.

In crafting this thriller, I wanted to explore the terrifying notion of losing control over your actions and the subsequent struggle to discover the truth. Marcus’s battle with parasomnia serves as a metaphor for the subconscious fears and hidden truths we all carry within us.

Through his journey, we delve into the fragile nature of memory and the devastating consequences of its absence. I wanted to create a taut psychological thriller that keeps the audience guessing until the very end. The newly enhanced visuals and refined pacing in this Director’s Cut amplify the tension and suspense of the original.

One of the most rewarding aspects of creating IN MY SLEEP was working with such a talented and dedicated cast. Their performances brought depth and authenticity to the characters, elevating the story beyond my initial expectations.

Revisiting their work for this Director’s Cut has only deepened my appreciation for their craft. The cast’s ability to convey the complex emotions and psychological states required for this thriller was truly remarkable, and I deeply appreciated their commitment to the project.

Ultimately, IN MY SLEEP is about confronting our deepest fears and the lengths we’ll go to uncover the truth – even when that truth might destroy what we thought we knew about ourselves. This definitive version offers both longtime fans and new viewers a chance to experience the full intensity of that story.

Q&A with Filmmaker Allen Wolf

Q: What inspired you to write “In My Sleep”?

A: I was fascinated by stories of people doing horrifying things while sleepwalking. The idea of someone committing an act without consciousness or memory intrigued me. I thought most people could relate to feeling a part of their lives is out of control, and I wanted to explore that concept to the extreme – what if you lost control while sleeping?

Q: Why did you decide to release a Director’s Cut of “In My Sleep”?

A: The original version of “In My Sleep” was released in 2011, and over time, I felt there were aspects of the film that could be enhanced to better realize my original vision. This Director’s Cut gave me the opportunity to revisit and refine the movie, making it a more intense and immersive experience for both longtime fans and new viewers.

Q: What are the main differences between the original release and the director’s cut?

A: The director’s cut has been re-edited and color-graded to enhance the film’s nocturnal atmosphere and significantly enhance the film’s visual impact. The new coloring heightens the contrast between the sunny Los Angeles exterior scenes and the darker, more ominous moments of Marcus’s internal struggle. This visual enhancement helps to underscore the psychological tension in the story and creates a more immersive atmosphere for the audience. I’ve also tightened the overall length for a more intense viewing experience.

Q: What do you hope new viewers will take away from this version of the film?

A: For new viewers, I hope this director’s cut provides a thrilling and thought-provoking experience. The enhanced visuals and pacing should make for a more engaging viewing experience, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in Marcus’s world and the psychological complexities of the story. Ultimately, I want both new and returning viewers to come away with a deeper appreciation for the film’s themes while enjoying a thrilling ride.

Q: Will the original version of “In My Sleep” still be available, or is the Director’s Cut replacing it entirely?

A: The Director’s Cut is now the definitive version of “In My Sleep” and will be the primary version available going forward. While some fans may still have access to the original release on DVD or Blu-ray, all digital platforms and future physical media releases will feature this new cut. We believe this version offers the most complete and refined experience of the film. For those who’ve seen the original, the Director’s Cut provides an opportunity to rediscover the story with enhanced visuals and additional depth. For new viewers, this is now the optimal way to experience “In My Sleep” as it represents my fullest artistic vision for the film.
